Body alignment is how your bones, joints and spine line up and share your weight when you stand, sit and move. Good spinal alignment spreads that load evenly. Poor posture and back misalignment push it into one area, and that is often where pain begins.

This guide explains what whole-body alignment means, the common types of posture and alignment problems, and how they are assessed. A standing, whole-body scan does something most imaging does not. 01 — The basics

What body alignment and spinal alignment mean

Your body works as a chain. Your feet support your knees, your knees support your hips, your hips support your pelvis, and your pelvis supports your spine, all the way up to your head. When every link sits where it should, your weight passes smoothly through the chain and no single part is overloaded.

Spinal alignment is how the natural curves of your spine stack up through your neck, your mid-back and your lower back, and how your spine sits over your pelvis. These gentle curves are meant to act like a spring. They absorb shock and keep you balanced.

Posture alignment is how you hold your whole body, with your head over your shoulders, your shoulders over your hips, and your weight even through both legs.

Neither has to be perfectly straight. A healthy body has natural curves and small differences from side to side. The question is whether your alignment is balanced enough to share load well, or whether it has drifted far enough to cause problems.

The pain is not always the cause

When one part of the chain is out of line, the rest has to make up for it. This is called compensation. A tight hip can change how you walk. A difference in leg length can tilt your pelvis. A rounded upper back can push your head forward. Each of these makes another area work harder than it was designed to.

This is why pain so often shows up away from the real cause. Knee pain can start at the hip or the foot. Lower back pain can come from the pelvis, the legs or the way you stand. Treating only the painful spot can help for a while, but if the underlying alignment has not changed, the problem tends to return.

Seeing the whole chain at once is what makes the difference. It helps separate the place that hurts from the thing that is driving it.

07 — Who it suits

Who a whole-body alignment assessment is for

This kind of assessment is built for adults who want to understand a posture or alignment problem, including people with:

  • back, hip or knee pain that has lasted a long time, or that nothing seems to settle
  • a posture concern, or a visible difference such as one shoulder or hip sitting higher
  • repeated sports injuries that keep coming back
  • a need to prepare for, or recover from, joint or spine surgery
  • conditions such as hypermobility, where stability and alignment matter

It is worth being honest about what EOS is best for. EOS is built to show bones, joints and alignment. If your question is mainly about soft tissue, discs or nerves, an MRI may be the better tool, and we will tell you if that is the case. What is spinal alignment?
Spinal alignment is how the natural curves of your spine stack up through your neck, mid-back and lower back, and how your spine sits over your pelvis and legs. When alignment is good, your body shares its weight evenly. When it drifts, one area takes more load, which can lead to stiffness or pain.
What causes poor posture and back misalignment?
Common causes include long hours sitting or looking at screens, an old injury, muscle imbalance, a leg length difference, looser joints, pregnancy, and normal wear with age. Often more than one of these adds up over time.
Can poor posture and misalignment be corrected?

How do I know if my posture or spine is misaligned?
